Kano State Government is set to flag up a flamboyant mass wedding ceremony for intending couples struggling to consummate their unions but lacking the financial muscles.

Already the state government through the Hisbah Board Commission has concluded modalities to purchase material needs including clothing, food items, furniture, and other necessities for 1,800 couples selected to benefit from the state government-funded initiative.

Commissioner for Information, Halilu Baba Dantiye confirmed to the Guardian that the mass wedding ceremony was part of the state palliative initiative.

He hinted that a plan was underway to unveil the distribution of grains to the less privileged amid criticism on how interventions that were meant to cushion the impact of the removal of fuel subsidy was converted to fund mass wedding.

Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, told journalists on Wednesday that the government is set to consummate the mass wedding which, according to him was designed to curtail social vices and poverty in the state.

”Each bride will receive a set of bed, mattress and pillows, as well as N20, 000 to start up a business. Although some philanthropists have pledged to contribute their quota to ensure the success of the wedding, government has provided budget provisions for the wedding,” he said.

“1,800 couples will benefit from the gesture, which would go a long way in curtailing societal vices and poverty in the society, as many marriages were being postponed, due to inability of parents to sponsor the wedding.”

Daurawa said that the wedding date would be announced to enable residents and individuals willing to assist to contribute their quota toward the desired objectives.

He added that criteria had been set for the selection of the beneficiaries adding that those who divorced their spouses on flimsy excuses after the marriage would be made to pay back by the government.
